Abstract
8-HYDROXYQUINOLINE (‘oxine’), a powerful antibacterial in vitro, and 7-allyl-3-aza-oxine are reported to be without chemotherapeutic effect in mice1. Their in vitro bacteriostatic effects were considerably reduced in the presence of intact, but not of lysed, mammalian erythrocytes1. We have now investigated this in vitro inactivation of oxine to determine whether it is caused by uptake of the drug by erythrocytes, chemical transformation, or by the liberation of an oxine-inhibiting substance.
