Abstract
WE have observed in this laboratory that the manner in which a detonation proceeds in a homogeneous explosive is more complex than had previously been thought. Regions of relatively low luminosity have been observed in the detonation fronts of homogeneous solid and liquid explosives under certain conditions of diameter and confinement. Although these regions of low luminosity, which we call ‘dark-waves’, are larger and more numerous under conditions close to failure, they have also been observed under conditions in which the detonation is apparently proceeding at normal, constant velocity.
