Effect of Sialoadenectomy on Thyroid Activity

Abstract

THE rapid appearance of iodide in saliva following administration of iodide iodine-131 has been demonstrated1, and its measurement has proved useful in the evaluation of the thyroid status of clinical cases2. Recently, an experiment has been reported3 which suggested that the salivary glands may play an important part in thyroid metabolism, involving the removal of iodine-131 diiodotyrosine from the peripheral circulation. Dehalogenation processes by characteristic enzymes in the salivary gland tissue have been observed4.
