Abstract
VARIOUS workers have directed attention to the possible importance of aromatic host constituents in associations between plants and pathogens1–3. Recent work at East Malling4,5 on the water-soluble constituents of apple and pear leaves and stems has made possible a detailed investigation of the biochemical aspects of host–parasite relations in Venturia inaequalis and V. pirina, the causal fungi of apple scab and pear scab respectively.
