Abstract
MEASUREMENTS of the variation of neutron cross-section with neutron energy have been made at Harwell using an electron linear accelerator pulsed neutron source, and a time of flight spectrometer technique1. In these measurements a boron trifluoride proportional gas counter was used, and in order to obtain an adequate efficiency of detection it was necessary to use a rather large gas volume. This counter limited the neutron energy resolution in two ways: at low neutron energies (10 eV.) the counter length of 50 cm. was the main indeterminacy in the neutron flight distance, and at high neutron energies (keV.) there was the additional and larger indeterminacy in the ion collection time in the counter.
