Formation Constants of some Metal-Tropolone Complexes

Abstract

THE formation constants of several metal derivatives of tropolone have been determined in order to compare the co-ordination tendency of tropolone with that of other co-ordinating groups. The order of stability of the various metal derivatives is CuII > Be > Pb > (Zn, Ni) > CoII. In general, this order agrees with that found for the co-ordination compounds of ammonia1, ethylenediamine1,2, salicylaldehyde1–4, salicylaldehyde-5-sulphonic acid5, β-diketones4,6,7, 8-hydroxyquinoline4, 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulphonic acid8, and α-amino-acids8,9. The metal-tropolone compounds are more stable than the corresponding acetylacetone compounds, which may be further evidence of the greater stability of five-membered chelate rings compared to six-membered rings.
