Abstract
CONSIDERABLE historical interest is attached to the action of heat on the salts of organic acids, and, in particular, to the formation of aldehydes by the pyrolysis of a mixture of the appropriate calcium or barium salt with the corresponding formate1. In the course of a wider investigation, a study of the mechanism of such reactions has been undertaken using the isotopic tracer technique, and this preliminary note reports on the formation of acetaldehyde from acetate–formate mixtures.
