Abstract
MOST of the extensive work carried out during the last half-century on transpiration has been mainly concerned with stomatal behaviour and the amount of water vapour passing out from the stomata during their period of opening. Very little attention seems to have been given to the nature of the outer surface of the inesophyll cell walls through which the water vapour passes, and through which at the same time active gaseous exchange takes place.
