Abstract
ACCOBDING to recently published information, 40,000 people were killed on the roads in the United States in 1941 and the cost of all road accidents during the same period amounted to little short of £500,000,0001. Comparable figures for Great Britain are not available, but the records of past years speak for themselves. In the ten years preceding 1940, 69,781 people lost their lives in road accidents and about 2¼ million people were injured. The most conservative estimate shows that the average cost of these accidents to the community, together with that of the much larger number of accidents involving damage, but not death or injury, could not have been less than £50,000,000 a year.
