ACTIVITY OF CARBONIC ANHYDRASE WITHIN RED BLOOD CORPUSCLES

Abstract

CARBONIC anhydrase, the enzyme which catalyses the reversible reaction H2C03CO2 + H20, is present in a large concentration in the red blood corpuscles1, the gastric mucosa2,3,4 and the pancreas5 of vertebrates, especially mammals. The enzyme plays a very important part in the carbon dioxide transport by the blood, and its activity is directly or indirectly linked with the reactions involved in the acid–base equilibrium in the body.
