Abstract
ASSOCIATED with the usual type of fireclay in the Ecca Series of the Karroo System in the Witwaters-rand area are certain chocolate-coloured, very plastic and fine-grained refractory clays. The colouring matter is organic and mainly colloidal. The clays are difficult to disperse, unless the organic matter is totally destroyed. Owing to the fine state of division of the organic phases, mechanical separation from the inorganic material is impossible. Extraction tests in a Soxhlet apparatus with solvents specified gave the results in the table below.
