Abstract
GROWTH of the mandible has been a controversial problem since the days of John Hunter, notwith-standing that he, John Tomes the elder and George Humphry in turn performed crucial experiments which showed that growth took place at the posterior border of the mandible and absorption at the anterior border, thus providing room for the eruption of the developing permanent molars.
