Abstract
INSTRUMENTS IN SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY THE presidential address by Mr. R. S. Whipple to Section A (Mathematical and Physical Sciences) is largely devoted to showing how much the progress of the sciences depends upon the development of the instruments employed. A few well-known instruments are selected as examples—the microscope, telescope, spectroscope, etc. Their development has a long history and each can be adapted to yield accurate measurements by the addition of suitable devices.
