Short-Range α-Particles from Oxygen, Nitrogen and Fluorine Bombarded with Protons

Abstract

THE bombardment of fluorine by protons leads to the emission of astrong γ-radiation, for which the excitation curve shows well-defined resonances1. In a letter by Dee, Curran and Strothers2, in which the nature of this γ-radiation is discussed, strong reasons are given for expecting the emission of a short-range α-particle group in the same transmutation, and it is pointed out that this group should show the same resonance excitation as is found for the γ-radiation. Assuming the γ-ray energy3 to be 5.8 Mv., the calculated mean range of the α-particle group is 1.1 cm.
