Abstract
SIR JAMES JEANS compares the observed eccentricity of the orbital motions of binary stars with that calculated from the principle of equipartition of energy. He points out that there is a good agreement between the calculated and observed figures, which supports the long time scale (1013 years) for the life of the universe.
