Abstract
THE career of Prof. Ernst Heiririch Haeckel, the centenary of whose birth falls on February 16, belongs to the heroic stage of the history of the theory of evolution. In 1862, at the early age of twenty-eight, he was appointed to the chair of zoology in the University of Jena, a post which he held until his death in 1914.
