Abstract
IN a recent letter to NATURE1 we described the absorption spectrum of the unsaponifiable matter of wheat-germ oil. Our main conclusions have now been supported by Morton and Edisbury2, and by Euler, Hellström and Klussmann3, who in each case had carried out independent work on the same problem before the publication of our results. The latter workers also examined a concentrate from lettuce leaves, in which case the visible absorption (yellow colour) was found to be relatively more intense in proportion to the ultra-violet absorption than in the case of wheat-germ oil concentrate. From a study of the visible absorption bands, they have concluded that the yellow colour in each case is due to xanthophyll. They suggest that vitamin E may absorb in the ultra-violet.
