Abstract
L ISTER was one of the greatest discoverers in the realm of preventive medicine. His direct contribution equalled in usefulness that ever made by one man; for the antiseptic system of treating wounds relieved mankind from most of the danger and suffering attendant upon surgical operations and permitted the art of surgery to advance to unimagined achievements. His indirect contribution was great and far reaching, but is less easy of assessment.
