Abstract
THE problems of muscular activity have been 1 investigated for many years from an academic viewpoint, yet it is only in recent times that a demand has arisen for the application of exact means of measurements of the physiological cost of muscular work in industry. The Medical Research Council's report for the years 1923β24 states that βThe studies of muscle function which were almost notorious for their supposed uselessness to the student or physician have laid down basic knowledge which now underlies many parts of medical science and art, and are beginning to remove empiricism from practical studies of physical training and of industrial labour.β
