Abstract
JOHN ALLEN HARKER was born at Alston, Cumber land, on January 23, 1870, and died at Highgate on October 10. He was thus only in his fifty-fourth year at the time of his death. The son of the Rev. John Harker, Congregational minister, he was educated at Stockport Grammar School, thence proceeding to the University of Manchester (Owens College), where he was elected Dalton scholar in chemistry in 1891 and a year later Berkeley fellow in physics, taking his M.Sc. A research course at Tubingen followed, where he took the Ph.D.
