The 2007 revised ESC/ESH Guidelines in the management of hypertension: clarifying individual patient care

The cynic would argue that compilation and citation of clinical practice guidelines has become a local, national and international obsession. Generating these consensus documents involves vast effort, although the general aim is the improvement of hypertension (and cardiovascular risk) management.1, 2 In the past, documents in hypertension care have generated debate but sometimes represent little new to relevant specialists. While never intended to be proscriptive by writing committees, some health-care systems use guidance statements to limit clinical activity, prescribing practice and/or remuneration to those ‘approved’ by these documents.

The latest revision of the ESC/ESH guidelines for the treatment of hypertension3 comes as a refreshing change to this otherwise mundane aspect of the hypertension literature. The setting is specifically that pertinent to patients in the broad range of European economies and their health systems.
