Abstract
SIAM has a double interest, for not only is it a rich and fertile country, inhabited by a pleasant people who have an undoubted part to play in the world, but it lies between two great Powers, and owes its safety to that fact. Consule Planco it nearly caused a war. Now it is a “buffer” State, and it is to the interest of both England and France that it should be strong and progress. It is the only country inhabited by an Indo-Chinese people which is under independent government, and it will be an interesting study for the future to compare its progress in various ways with that of the kindred races on each side, one under French and one under English rule.
