Immunological deficiency syndromes

Immunological deficiency syndromes are diseases or conditions in which there is a loss of or defect in a component of the immune system. Patients with these syndromes have an increased susceptibility to infections and to developing certain cancers. These syndromes include primary immune deficiency diseases, such as severe combined immunodeficiency, and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

    Work during the past two decades has highlighted how HIV contributes to hepatic inflammation and fibrosis, leading to changes in the timing of antiretroviral therapy initiation and to improved diagnosis and management of liver disease in patients with HIV. As this population ages, clinician vigilance with early detection of emerging liver disease will be critical.
