  Structure and function of polycystins: insights into polycystic kidney disease

  Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is caused by pathogenic mutations in the genes that encode polycystin 1 (PC1) and PC2. In this article, the authors discuss findings from structural and electrophysiological studies that give us insight into the function of polycystins and ADPKD pathogenesis.

  Autosomal dominant PKD gets an atomic map

  The polycystin complex structure has been solved at near-atomic resolution. Its surprising architecture provides new insights into the transient receptor potential (TRP) family of cation channels and the pathogenesis of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease. This discovery should have a transformative impact on the development of treatment strategies to cure the disease.
