Cancer stem cells

Cancer stem cells are rare immortal cells within a tumour that can both self-renew by dividing and give rise to many cell types that constitute the tumour, and can therefore form tumours. Such cells have been found in various types of human tumours and might be attractive targets for cancer treatment.

Autophagy and cancer stem cells: molecular mechanisms and therapeutic applications

Autophagy and mitophagy are deregulated in many types of cancer stem cells (CSCs). Although there is yet to be discovered, both autophagy and mitophagy are able to regulate different steps of CSCs physiology such as metabolism, stemness, migration and chemo-resistance.

Microenvironmental cues in cancer stemness

Intra-tumour heterogeneity manifests both at the level of mutational burden, and at a functional level within genetically homogenous populations. A new modelling approach suggests stemness within colorectal tumours is defined by microenvironmental cues secreted from cancer-associated fibroblasts rather than cell-intrinsic properties.
