Atmospheric optics

Atmospheric optics is a branch of optics and photonics that studies how light behaves in the Earth’s atmosphere. This can include both understanding naturally occurring effects involving sunlight and the propagation and distortion of electromagnetic signals through air.

Megafilament in air formed by self-guided terawatt long-wavelength infrared laser

A terawatt picosecond CO₂ laser beam is shown to form a centimetre-scale-diameter filament in air that is capable of carrying several joules of energy.

Distribution of high-dimensional entanglement via an intra-city free-space link

Increasing the dimensionality of entangled states improves robustness and capacity of secure quantum communications, but it requires suitably modified setups. Here the authors report the distribution of high-dimensional polarization and energy-time entangled photons via a 1.2 km-long free-space link.
