Abstract
THE metabolic requirements of the preimplantation stages of mammalian development are difficult to study in vivo. The use of synthetic culture media capable of maintaining growth of the fertilized ovum is a useful technique for this problem. Continuous culture from the single cell fertilized ovum to the blastocyst stage in synthetic media has already been achieved for the mouse1 and rabbit2.
