Abstract
RECENTLY, numerous papers have been published on the spectra of nickel (II)1–3 and cobalt (II)4,5 complexes in which the Racah parameter B has been deduced. For those octahedral nickel (II) complexes where only the ν2(3A2g − 3T1g(F)) and the ν3(3A2g − 3T1g(P)) bands were observed, Dq and B were found by solving the secular equation6 by trial and error2. We have found that in these circumstances it is possible to simplify the problem to that of solving a quadratic equation in Dq, ν2 and ν3 only. The equations for finding Dq and B from ν2 and ν3 for octahedral nickel (II) complexes (d8) are:
