The group mean statistical parametric mapping (SPMz) maps of the areas of increased regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) associated with swallowing are shown as three orthogonal projections through sagittal (side view), coronal (back view), and transverse (top view) views of the brain. A threshold of p =.001 was applied. A number of areas are activated, including regions corresponding to sensorimotor cortex, bilaterally, right insula, left cerebellum, left mesial frontal cortex, temporopolar cortex, and dorsal brain stem.
