Nature Outlook

Science and technology education

A strong background in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is crucial not only for students who go on to become scientists. The jobs of the future, in a variety of sectors, will increasingly require skills in STEM subjects. This Outlook looks at the ways in which science education is being modernized and updated to help prepare young people for life in the twenty-first century.

The Amgen Foundation seeks to advance excellence in science education to inspire the next generation of innovators, and to invest in strengthening communities where Amgen staff members live and work. Over the past three decades, the Foundation has donated nearly $300 million to local, regional and international nonprofit organizations that impact society in inspiring and innovative ways.

The Foundation brings the excitement of discovery to the scientists of tomorrow through several signature programs, including the Amgen Biotech Experience, which has reached more than 700,000 high school students by empowering teachers to bring cutting-edge biotechnology tools and wet-lab procedures into their classrooms; and the Amgen Scholars Program, which has enabled thousands of undergraduate students to participate in groundbreaking research opportunities at world-class institutions.

Recently, the Amgen Foundation awarded $6.5 million in grant funding to Harvard University to develop, launch and grow LabXchange – a free, virtual lab experience uniquely designed to level the playing field for aspiring scientists. The platform will offer digital instruction and collaboration capabilities to high school and college students, enabling them to gain meaningful exposure to the scientific process.
