The research insights featured in this issue of the BDJ (Volume 222 issue 5) were all written by dental students who entered a competition following a writing workshop held in February.

BDJ Editor-in-Chief Stephen Hancocks and Senior Managing Editor Ruth Doherty were invited to speak at King's College London Dental Society by the President of the Society, Balraj Singh Sohal. Drs Hancocks and Doherty gave a talk entitled 'How to get published in the BDJ... and other journals'.

King's College London Dental Society is one of the oldest and largest dental societies in Europe and represents over 800 students. Participants at the writing workshop were encouraged to enter a competition to write for the BDJ. They were presented with three BDJ papers scheduled for publication and asked to pick one to write a summary about.

Dr Doherty said: 'We received ten entries and the standard of writing was incredibly high. It was a hard to task to choose our three winners'.

The winners are:

Daniel Hawkes (4th year undergraduate)

Kimberly K. Q. Ng (2nd year undergraduate)

J. S. Lau (2nd year undergraduate).

Their winning entries can be found on pages 361–364.

BDJ Research Insights are featured in every second issue of the Journal and are designed to bring research papers to life with accessible summaries, Q&As with the authors, expert views and infographics summarising the work in a 'quick bite' of information: perfect for the busy GDP.

The BDJ would like to extend thanks to everyone who entered the competition and congratulations to all of the winners!
