The concept of strengthening blood pressure control dominates once again

Recent studies in antihypertensive therapy have shown that the concept of strengthening blood pressure control dominates once again.

First, the results of the latest meta-analysis of the Blood Pressure Lowering Treatment Trialists’ Collaboration (BPLTTC), which has received widespread attention over the last year, were recently released [1]. Similar to the preliminary conclusions announced last year during the ESC Annual Meeting, the results of this meta-analysis showed that the risk of adverse cardiovascular events was reduced by ~10% within 4 years with a reduction in blood pressure of 5 mmHg regardless of the patient’s baseline blood pressure level (systolic blood pressure <120 mmHg or ≥170 mmHg) and whether it was associated with arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The new findings add much weight to enhanced antihypertensive treatment strategies. Some researchers believed that this study did not take the incidence of hypotension-related adverse events as the end point, but the risk of hypotension was mainly due to the increase in adverse cardiovascular events. The primary end point of this study included adverse events related to both hypertension and hypotension, so the data were comprehensive results. That is, even if some subjects may have adverse events due to excessive hypotension, the benefits of positive hypotension are positive from a group perspective.
