Sweden is a small country with some 10 million inhabitants. Although in the lower tertile of the obesity prevalence league in Europe, the present percentage of adults with body mass index (BMI) >30 kg/m2 is above 14%. Many Swedes have been internationally well-known scientists in the field of obesity research. Per Björntorp was our grand old man with encyclopedic knowledge about fat and fat cell metabolism. Lars Sjöström—also from Gothenburg—headed the famous SOS study using surgery as a tool to obtain considerable and maintained weight loss to demonstrate associated reduced morbidity and mortality. Peter Arner from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm has contributed with very important research in the field of adipose tissue metabolism.
