Ten tips for pre-op assessment of tooth extractions in adult patients

Medical history of the patient can impact on tooth extractions in more ways than one. Although a comprehensive discussion on the medical problems is beyond the scope of this article, three important elements are discussed below.

Identify any systemic platelet (e.g. thrombocytopenia) or coagulation disorders (hereditary or acquired). Many times, such patients may need referral for management in secondary care settings. Also note any medications which may compromise platelet function (e.g. Aspirin, Dipyridamole, Clopidogrel, Prasugrel and Ticagrelor), or coagulation (e.g. Warfarin, Dabigatran, Apixaban, Rivaroxaban etc). Such patients may require preoperative preparation and additional local haemostatic measures during extractions.1
