Abstract 195
Fetal-exposure to pesticides and heavy metals is difficult to establish due to the lack of a sensitive measure of exposure. By meconium analysis, we have quantitated fetal exposure to pesticides by GC/MS and to heavy metals by atomic absorption spectrometry. Subjects consisted of 200 mother/infants dyads from 7 nurseries in Manila, Philippines. (Table) This is the first study to demonstrate substantial fetal exposure to environmental pollutants and its effects on the fetus. Meconium analysis is a new and sensitive method to detect such exposure.
