INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON BRAIN DYSFUNCTION

“Neurogentic Disease: From Molecule to Patient” will be the focus of the 4th International Symposium on Brain Dysfunction to be held in Troina, Sicily (Italy), September 24-26, 1997. Various aspects of neurogenetic diseases: phenotypes, pathology, pharmacology, biochemistry, genetics, animal models, and treatment will be discussed. We hope that this international meeting will further promote research in this field in order to understand pathogenesis as well as to develop new therapeutic approaches to genetic diseases affecting the nervous system.

Three lectures per session will be presented by invited speakers. The last hour of each session will be devoted to free communication by other participants at the Symposium. Deadline for the presentation of abstracts for free communications is July 15, 1997.

The Oasi Institute invites the submission of original, unpublished research papers to compete for the 1997 award on the following subject: Neurogenetic Disease: From Molecule to Patient.

Research Opportunities

PIERRE ROYER PRICE

The Pierre Royer Prize is awarded by the Société Française de Pédiatrie to a medical doctor whose work is recognized as having had a major influence on child health. This award has been established as a mark of recognition of the Society in honor of the outstanding leadership and work of Pierre Royer.

The prize of 150,000 FFr is awarded every second year at a meeting of the Société de Française de Pédiatrie. The winner of the Pierre Royer Prize is required to present a lecture at the awards ceremony. The prize will be awarded for the first time in October, 1997.

Nominations for the award should be sent to the Société Française de Pediatrie by July 1, 1997. University professors and directors of research programs are particularly encouraged to submit the names and dossiers of possible candidates.

CHARLES E. CULPEPER FOUNDATION

Scholarships in Medical Science

The Charles E. Culpeper Foundation is currently accepting applications for its 1998 Scholarships in Medical Science Program designed to support the career development of academic physicians. Up to three awards of $100,000 per year for 3 years will be made to the United States medical schools on behalf of candidates who are U.S. citizens, have received their M.D. degree from a U.S. medical school in 1989 or later, and are judged worthy of support by virtue of the quality of their research proposals. All scientific research relevant to human health is eligible for consideration. No institution may nominate more than one candidate. In selecting awardees, emphasis will be on identifying young physicians with clear potential for making substantial contributions to science as academic physicians. Since January 1988, 26 physicians have been selected as Charles E. Culpeper Foundation Medical Scholars. Deadline for applications is August 15, 1997. Awards will be announced by January 9, 1998 for activation on or about July 1, 1998.
