Surfactant therapy, changes in ventilatory strategies, and increasing use of antenatal and postnatal steroids are some of the therapeutic interventions introduced in Neonatology to impact mortality and morbidity of very low birth weight {VLBW} infants. We evaluated the outcomes of 11,429 VLBW infants admitted and treated between 1993 and 1995 in the neonatal intensive care units {NICU} participating in National Neonatal Database {NND} Network. All data were collected prospectively. Table

Table 1

Data from this NND NICU's shows remarkably consistent outcomes over the 3 years. However, analysis of outcomes among NND NICU's show significant intercenter variations. Center to center differences may be due to lack of uniform application of new therapies. Concurrent review and in-depth analysis of large data bases may be used to improve quality of care among participating centers as favorable outcomes from some centers can be translated into better outcomes for all centers.
