Background: Transient HI leads to a delayed decline in cerebral nucleotide triphosphate (NTP)/exchangeable phosphate pool (EPP) ratios measured by phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). We measured changes in CuA during the development of delayed energy failure in order to investigate the relationship between mitochondrial cytochrome redox state and cerebral phosphorus high energy metabolites.

Subjects and Interventions: 6 piglets aged <24h were anaesthetized and subjected to a transient episode of cerebral HI followed by resuscitation and maintenance of intensive support. NTP/EPP ratio was measured by MRS and CuA changes from baseline determined with a multichannel near infrared spectrometer (600-1000nm). Table

Conclusion: Cytochrome redox state falls in parallel with the delayed decline in cerebral phosphorus energetics.
