The winning image of this month's Nature Cell Biology and Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology 'Cell of the Month' competition was submitted by Carrie Phillips (Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, USA (cphilli3@iupui.edu)). It shows waves of glomerular podocytes.

Fixed rat kidney cells were labelled using markers for podocyte bodies and primary processes (blue) and podocyte nuclei (brown). Optical slices were collected using two-photon fluorescence microscopy (a Bio-Rad MRC1024 laser scanning confocal two-photon system with a Nikon microscope and a Spectra-Physics laser) and were rendered in three dimensions using Voxx software. Bar, 50 μm.

The winner would like to acknowledge Jeffrey Clendenon and Jason Byars (Indiana Center for Biological Microscopy, Indianapolis, USA) for creating and updating the freely available Voxx software.
