Legal issues for biological research standards

To the editor:

I commend you for drawing attention to recent standards-development initiatives in the biological research fields through your November 2006 editorial “Standard operating procedures”1 and the series of related correspondence published in the following months2,3. The technical standards being developed by such groups as the Proteomics Standards Initiative, the Microarray Gene Expression Data Society and the Metabolomics Standards Initiative are much-needed tools that will hopefully improve the efficiency and quality of collaborative research in the biological sciences.
