Action needed to harmonize regulation of low-level presence of biotech traits

It is clear that new crop varieties with biotech-derived traits must be assessed for food, feed and environmental safety before commercialization and intended release in the environment. Functioning international regulatory systems have evaluated these new traits, first using the 1986 Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD; Paris) work in “Recombinant DNA Safety Considerations”1 and now the Codex guidelines for “Conduct of Food Safety Assessment of Food Derived from Recombinant DNA Plants”2 for food and feed safety, as well as rules similar to Annex III of the “Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety”3 for environmental safety and deliberate release.
