Richard Hurrell is an emeritus Professor of Human Nutrition having retired in 2012 as Head of the Institute of Food, Nutrition and Health at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zürich. After studying Food Technology at the Reading University, UK, he studied Nutrition at the University of Cambridge, UK, where he completed his PhD and post-doctoral studies. In 1978, Dr Hurrell joined the Nestlé Research Centre Lausanne, Switzerland, and became Head of the Micronutrient Research Team and the Coordinator for Infant Nutrition Research. In 1994, he was made Professor of Human Nutrition. His research focuses on food-based strategies to combat micronutrient deficiencies with an emphasis on food fortification. His current focus is on iron nutrition and on the iron fortification/biofortification of foods, and the use of stable isotope techniques to measure iron absorption in human subjects, and long-term efficacy studies to monitoring iron status of women and children consuming iron-fortified foods. He is a board member of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition since 2001 and Editor of the International Journal for Vitamin and Nutrition Research.
