Ovarian Control of Vitellogenin Synthesis by the Fat Body in Aedes aegypti

Abstract

INSECT yolk proteins, or vitellogenins, are synthesized and secreted by the fat body1–4, and are sequestered from the haemolymph by the developing oocytes5–7. Hormonal involvement in this process has been suggested by our work with the fat body of Aedes aegypti4,8, and we now report that a factor, produced by the ovary, acts directly on the fat body to activate and maintain synthesis.
