Catastrophic Damage to Coral Reef Communities by Earthquake

Abstract

THERE is interest in the disruption of coral reef communities by isolated events such as hurricanes, river floods, and torrential rainfall over reef areas1,2 or by seasonal fluctuations of sea level, excessive sedimentation, pollution and other human activities, and predation by Acanthaster planci. Dead reefs off Guadalcanal and elsewhere in the Solomon Islands have been tentatively ascribed to emersion resulting from earthquake activity3, and here I describe disruption of reef communities by earthquake near Madang, north-east New Guinea.
