Abstract
THE high radiosensitivity of undifferentiated human neuroblastoma is well known, but the nature of changes induced by irradiation is uncertain. Two ideas have emerged from the observations of radiobiologists and radiotherapists: (a) neuroblastoma cells are destroyed or (b) they are induced to differentiate or “mature” into ganglioneuroma by ionizing radiation. Experimental evidence to support the hypothesis of radiation-induced differentiation is lacking. The availability of mouse neuroblastoma cell culture provides an opportunity to study the nature of cellular alterations produced by ionizing radiation. This paper shows that X-irradiation induced morphological differentiation of neuroblastoma cells which in the presence of serum undergo morphological maturation.
