Structural Polymorphism in Chromosome 17

Abstract

IN a study of the sites and relative frequencies of secondary constrictions in human somatic chromosomes, Ferguson-Smith et al.1 observed that chromosome 17 (refs. 2 and 3) occasionally bore satellites. In 1,303 karyotype analyses from 148 different individuals, only eight of the cells had such a chromosome. It had a constriction in the short arm which was interpreted as a satellite stalk.
