Intrinsic Reddening of Eta Carinae

Abstract

Relative intensities of [Fe II] lines at different wavelengths in the spectrum of η Carinae suggest a colour excess EBV=I2, considerably greater than that of the surrounding region. This result leads to a replacement of the synchrotron-like exponential law Fv eav that has been inferred for the continuum in the visible and near infrared by a combination of two thermal spectra.
