Interactions of Dipyridamole and Adenosine on Platelet Aggregation

Abstract

DIPYRIDAMOLE (Persantine–Boehringer Ingelheim, Ltd), the coronary vasodilator, inhibits the entry of adenosine into red cells, and hence its breakdown1,2—suggesting that this accounts for the pharmacological effect, for adenosine itself is a vasodilator3. The knowledge that adenosine is a potent inhibitor of platelet aggregation induced by adenosine diphosphate (ADP)4 and of experimental thrombus formation5,6 led Emmons et al.7,8 to confirm that dipyridamole has similar effects.
