Abstract
COMMUNICATIONS which deal with mantle convection usually fall into one of two groups. The geological approach is to assume the East Pacific rise and Atlantic ridge systems to be loci of rising mantle material, which, after flowing parallel to the Earth's surface, sinks again in the vicinity of the East Indian and Caribbean trenches or the young mountain systems of western America and Eurasia. Good examples are given by Girdler1 and Wilson2. No attempt is made to portray the forms of convection cells within the mantle.
