Abstract
THE earliest investigations of the effects of oestrogens on the cytology of the anterior pituitary gland were made using oestrone1–3 which was first isolated in crystalline form in 1929. Diethylstilboestrol, a synthetic substance with oestrogenic activity, has been used in most of the more recent work4,5. In this communication the cytological effects of chronic administration of the naturally occurring oestrogens—oestrone, equilenin, 16-epioestriol and oestriol—on the anterior pituitary gland of ovariectomized rats are compared: the action of the last three has not been previously investigated. Measurements of the DNA content of individual nuclei from pituitary glands of rats treated with the oestrogens and of controls were made using Feulgen micro-spectrophotometry.
